Unaccounted cash in excess of Rs 10 crore was seized from four people in Meghalaya’s southwest Garo Hills district, which was connected to the polling booths, Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor said.
The seizure of the cash was done by the officials of the flying squad in the district, the director general said, adding that more than Rs 20 crore of unaccounted cash has been recovered in the state.
“Flying squads have seized Rs 10.35 crore in cash from the possession of four persons…” the CEO said.
The seizure took place after four people could not produce any valid document to carry the cash, but “no one was arrested”, he said. Their claims are being “investigated”, he said.
Elections to the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly will be held on February 27 and a model code of conduct is in force in the state.
The CEO had earlier said that at least 34 constituencies in Meghalaya have been identified as “expenditure sensitive” and strict monitoring will be carried out in these segments.
